Samantha Carell
Biography
Samantha Carell is a contemporary abstract artist whose practice examines the relationship between materiality, perception, and emotional experience. Through layered compositions of fluid acrylic, 24-karat gold, epoxy resin, and sculptural surfaces, she investigates the interplay of light, movement, and negative space, creating works that exist between painting and object. Grounded in formal studies of fine art, design, and color theory, Carell has developed a distinctive visual language informed by the physical behavior of fluid media. Her signature cellular formations emerge through viscosity-based processes that allow pigment to organize organically, balancing intention with chance. Carell's work explores themes of stillness, memory, and transformation, inviting sustained contemplation through subtle shifts in texture, luminosity, and scale. By integrating reflective materials such as gold leaf and resin, her paintings respond dynamically to changing light, reinforcing the relationship between the artwork, its environment, and the viewer. In 2025, Carell unveiled Arrival, a monumental site-specific installation commissioned by Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. The large-scale beachscape extends her ongoing investigation into landscape as a psychological and symbolic space, employing aerial perspectives and expansive fields of negative space to evoke presence, impermanence, and quiet reflection. Carell has exhibited internationally, and her work is held in both public and private collections. She was recognized as Best Emerging Artist at the 2018 Manayunk Arts Festival and was selected the following year as the festival's featured billboard artist. Based in South Jersey, she continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary abstraction through a practice that merges material experimentation with contemplative inquiry.
